Happier
Tal Ben-Shahar, Ph.D.
From Publisher's Weekly - Though everyone wants to be happier,
how many of us can actually define what that means? In his class,
"Positive Psychology," one of the most popular courses at Harvard
University, Ben-Shahar teaches that happiness isn't as elusive a concept
as people think, and can actually be learned; he commits the fundamentals
of his course to paper in this primer on getting happy, which he defines
as a combination of pleasure (short-term happiness) and meaning (long-term).
Divided into three parts, "What is Happiness?", "Happiness Applied" and
"Meditations on Happiness," Ben-Shahar provides insight and exercises,
prodding reflection in readers ("Do you accept negative emotions as
natural?" "Do you see your work as a job, a career, or a calling?") while
explicating the relationships among happiness, motivation and goals.
Though it sounds simple, Ben-Shahar insists on keen self-awareness and
purposeful action to overcome entrenched patterns of despondency and/or
disbelief. For answer-seekers, this is definitely a good start.

Evolve Your Brain
Joe Dispenza, D.C.
Take Your First Step Toward True Evolution Ever wonder why you
repeat the same negative thoughts in your head? Why you keep coming
back for more from hurtful family members, friends, or significant
others? Why you keep falling into the same detrimental habits or
limiting attitudeseven when you know that they are going to make you
feel bad? Dr. Joe Dispenza has spent decades studying the human mindhow
it works, how it stores information, and why it perpetuates the same
behavioral patterns over and over. In the acclaimed film What the
Bleep Do We Know!? he began to explain how the brain evolvesby
learning new skills, developing the ability to concentrate in the
midst of chaos, and even healing the body and the psyche. Evolve
Your Brain presents this information in depth, while helping you
take control of your mind, explaining how thoughts can create
chemical reactions that keep you addicted to patterns and
feelings including ones that make you unhappy. And when you know how
these bad habits are created, it's possible to not only break these
patterns, but also reprogram and evolve your brain, so that new,
positive, and beneficial habits can take over. This is something you
can start to do right now. You and only you have the power to change
your mind and evolve your brain for a better lifefor good.

The Extraordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things
Larry Dossey, M.D.
From Publishers Weekly - Holistic physician Dossey examines
the potential power of 14 readily accessible sources of well-being,
providing a strong case for utilizing such remedies before more extreme
measures. His expansive discourse on optimism, forgetting, music,
miracles, plants, risk taking and other "simple" things makes clear
that, while these are hardly "simple" when fully appreciated, often
they are undervalued or completely ignored by the mainstream medical
community, which turns to high-tech procedures and worst-case scenarios
as a first resort. According to Dossey (Reinventing Medicine), a nearly
single-minded clinical focus has obscured patients' interpretation of
their own experiences, leaving out important clues about how people
heal. He provides numerous examples of those who have discovered
"spontaneous healing," which most physicians discount or downplay
because they defy explanation. Despite the title, this is not a
step-by-step guide to accessing the healing power of home remedies.
Instead, Dossey takes readers on a poetic, well-researched journey into
the many paradoxes that are inherent in the human condition and how
they relate to healing the body, mind and soul.
